When he was informed by her that she was Demeter's daughter, Hermes offered to buy her silence, as he feared what Demeter would do if she found out about them meeting in the nude. At an unknown time, Persephone would meet Hermes after he accidentally trespassed on her bath while attempting to bathe himself before returning home.

Due to this incident, Demeter had the flower nymphs follow Persephone to the point where she was no longer ever alone. At some point, Persephone got in major trouble with Demeter during one spring where she decided to make everything, in Hades' words, "savage and wild," compared to Demeter's very clean and neat version of spring.Īfter Persephone realized that she was deceived by Zeus and Hera's son, Ares, she called Demeter to "defend" her. As Persephone grew, she believed that her mother was trying to hide her away from others, and even seemed to be afraid of her powers as she grew stronger. However, as it becomes apparent that Persephone is a fertility goddess-a rare type that is born every few thousand years and is revered amongst mortals for bringing fertility to them and the earth-and given the tragic fates of previous fertility goddesses, Demeter's reasons start to become clearer.

Persephone believed this was because Demeter wanted to avoid Zeus marrying her off to sweeten a business deal with another god, and to avoid both a terrible marriage, like Hera has with Zeus, and the adultery that seemed to be commonplace amongst the gods. With the onset of puberty, Demeter wanted Persephone to train as a sacred virgin and join the Goddesses of Eternal Maidenhood, giving her little choice in the matter. Demeter also signed her up for various academic and athletic programs, such as spelling bees, swimming competitions, and chess competitions, and pushed her to excel in a variety of subjects, such as mathematics. She is also shown to miss her mother and wonders how she is doing in the Mortal Realm.įrom an early age, Persephone was groomed to become the face of Demeter's Barley Mother brand. Persephone respects her mother for her strong-willed attitude and often takes after her no-nonsense approach to conflict. Although their relationship is often strained, and Persephone enjoyed her new freedom on Olympus, they are shown to still have a close and loving bond. This suffocating environment has manifested within Persephone in the form of a nightmare where Demeter trapped her in a greenhouse to keep her safe. Demeter often puts what she believes to be best for Persephone over what Persephone wants herself. As Demeter created Persephone solely by herself, she is very protective of her, to the point of being overbearing and controlling.

Demeter is Persephone's mother and creator.
